Good news on fields and in classrooms

February is here. The groundhog saw his shadow and in recent days it felt as if spring had already sprung in the Miss-Lou.

Such is the good news from the past week with new beginnings, at least on a couple of high school football teams.

Vidalia High School and Natchez High School have hired new head football coaches for their respective teams.

Randy Craft will lead the Bulldogs on the gridiron and Michael Norris will lead the Vikings on the gridiron in addition to continuing to serve as the Vidalia High School head baseball coach.

McLaurin Elementary School certainly placed a showing last week with the good news the school has been named “The Healthiest School in Mississippi,” by the Blue Cross & Blue Shield Foundation of Mississippi.

Congratulations to the students, faculty, staff and administrators for taking the top honor in the state and for receiving a $50,000 prize to help bolster the excellent health and nutrition programs at the school.

Also, in the education category, business leaders are teaming up with public and private schools with in the “Partners in Education” program reintroduced by Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce last week.

The program matches businesses with local schools to make a difference in the future of the community.

In the program businesses can provide mentoring and tutoring, assist in a library or classroom, be a guest speaker, sponsor a “Student of the Month,” field trips and other activities.
