Natchez police investigating Sunday afternoon fatal shooting

NATCHEZ — Natchez police officers are investigating a Sunday afternoon shooting that killed a man.

Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said Frederick Hunt Jr., 26, was shot to death approximately 2 p.m. Sunday on Lamar Street.

Adams County Coroner James Lee said it appeared to be a drive by shooting and Hunt was shot at least two times, with a fatal shot to the chest.

Lee said Hunt’s body has been sent to Jackson for an autopsy.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Response Team assisted in the investigation and helped locate the vehicle believed to have been used in the drive by, said ACSO Chief Deputy Jerry Brown.

“We have recovered the vehicle used but no arrest yet,” Armstrong said Monday afternoon. “We are processing the vehicle at this time. I have a team of investigators working this case and they are running down all leads.”

Armstrong encouraged anyone who might have information on the shooting to contact the Natchez Police Department.

“If there is anyone with information pertaining to this shooting, we encourage them to contact the police department or Crime Stoppers immediately,” Armstrong said. “We do have some leads that we are following right now. No arrests at the moment. We certainly could use any help from the public that they might have pertaining to this case.”

Lee said the shooting saddens him.

“I know prayer can change things,” Lee said. “But we all have to pray.”
