Natchez High baseball travels South to Biloxi for tournament

NATCHEZ — Natchez High Bulldogs will travel to Biloxi today through Thursday for a “Battle at the Beach” tournament where they will face three teams in a round-robin style format.

“I think it’s going to be a good tournament for us,” said Dan Smith, Natchez High head baseball coach. “There’s going to be good competition for us.”

Smith said this is the first time the Bulldogs will play in the Battle at the Beach tournament. The Bulldogs were invited to the tournament last season but did not to travel to it.

“I’m just excited for the Bulldogs at this tournament,” Smith said. “There’s going to be a lot of college and major league scouts here. My goal is to get more exposure for Natchez’s baseball program at the tournament.”

The Bulldogs (5-4) come into the Battle of the Beach tournament after a 12-0 win over Cathedral on March 3.

One of the players to watch for the Bulldogs is Dylan Troxler. In the game against Cathedral, Troxler pitched seven innings, struck out eight batters and gave up three hits.

Another Bulldog to watch is Lionell Minor, who went three for five against Cathedral and hit a three-run home run.

The Bulldogs (5-4) will play two games today. The first game is at 5 p.m. against Jackson Preparatory School and the second at 7 p.m. against the West Harrison High School Hurricanes (4-7).

“Jackson Prep is a powerhouse program,” Smith said. “But as long as we play hard against teams like Jackson Prep, then that’s all I ask. I’ll be happy with the outcome.”

Natchez High ends the Battle of the Beach tournament with a 2 p.m. game against the St. Aloysius Flashes (4-1). The Flashes come into the tournament off of a 4-1 victory over Leake Academy on March 9.
