Three 2nd 2 None youth basketball teams crowned champions

NATCHEZ — Three 2nd 2 None youth basketball teams won championships on Saturday at Robert Lewis Magnet School gymnasium.

The 2nd 2 None youth basketball league provides a year-round organized sports program serving children from ages 5-18. The basketball teams are comprised of kids from Natchez, Vidalia and Ferriday.

Six basketball teams met in the three youth basketball championships on Saturday.

12-and-under championship

The Gloster Hornets played against the Mavericks in the 12-and-under championship.

Cam Woodward, a player for the Hornets, said playing in the championship game was different for him.

“I played in the championship game for my uncle, Marcus Robinson,” Woodward said. “He died last year and I wanted to come out with a win this year.”

Gloster won 25-9 over the Mavericks.Woodward led the Hornets with 18 points.

Kenarius Thompson and Jamichele Hall each scored two points for the Hornets.

Jerry Chatman, Gloster Hornets head coach, coached in his second straight championship.

“It was awesome. We did everything that we needed to do,” Chatman said. “We played good defense and pretty good offense. We were back-to-back champions.”

13-to-15 years old championship

In the 13-to-15 years old championship, Natchez Mamba and the Ferriday Trojans played against each other.

With the Trojans clinging to a one-point lead in the fourth quarter, Damarion Swanson was fouled by a Mamba player and was forced to shoot two baskets at the free-throw line.

Swanson made two free throws and earned the Trojans the 39-36 victory over Mamba.

“I just have confidence in making clutch free throws,” Swanson said. “In nine out of 10 attempts, I’m going to make free throws.”

Swanson led Ferriday with 16 points and three 3-pointers in the championship. Ronald Ellis was second for the Trojans with 15 points.

Only five Trojans showed up for the championship game and all played the entire time.

“The players played with heart,” said Gary Stewart, Trojans head coach. “I was confident the whole time. Sometimes when you only have five people that means your best players get to play the whole game. I was at ease because I could just let them go out there and play their game, without having to sub players in and out.”

Jayvion Walker scored eight points for Mamba with one 3-pointer and one free throw. Caymon Matthews and Kendell Reynolds each scored six points.

Ladies championship

The Natchez Lady Warriors played against the Ferriday Living Simple in the Ladies championship on Saturday.

Living Simple won 24-16 over the Lady Warriors.

Faith Gutter led Living Simple with 13 points, including three free throws.

“Faith played awesome in the game,” Stewart said. “Faith has been playing big for us during the whole season. Today was good for her because she played with confidence.”

Stewart won two out of the three youth basketball championships on Saturday. He said Living Simple claimed its first youth basketball championship.

“Of course we’re going to cherish it,” Stewart said. “They all never played with each other. To come here, play together and win a championship, I think that’s something they should feel proud of.”

Stewart has coached six years in the 2nd 2 None basketball league while Chatman has coached for four years.

“2nd 2 None gives kids something to do besides being on the street and getting into trouble,” Chatman said. “I love it. For the youth, these youth sport programs are all they have.”
