Saturday update: Record week of COVID-19 cases continues, 13 news deaths reported

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported an additional 465 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in the last 24 hours bringing the total cases to 25,531. The state estimates more than 17,000 of those cases have fully recovered.

On Thursday, the state reported a single-day record for new cases with 1,092 cases.

Mississippi’s 7-day average of new cases rose to 554 per day, a new record high.

The 14-day average of daily new cases rose Saturday to 442 cases per day, also a new record high.

The state announced Saturday 13 new deaths were attributed to the virus bringing the total death toll to 1,035. Three of the deaths reported Saturday actually occurred between June 8 and June 15, but were delayed in reporting.

Mississippi’s death toll from coronavirus includes 509 people from long-term care facilities or 49.2 percent of the total deaths.

On Saturday the state reported 731 patients were hospitalized that either had confirmed COVID-19 or were suspected of having the virus, but hadn’t been confirmed by a test. The number of hospitalized patients was down from Friday’s record high of 769 patients.
